Child Care Subsidy Program

Child Care Subsidy is a monthly payment to assist eligible British Columbia families with the cost of child care. Monthly subsidy payments vary depending on the family’s circumstances.

Community Care Facility Licensing Program

In the province of British Columbia there is legislation to protect children receiving care in licensed community care facilities. This legislation is the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulation. Individuals providing care to more than two children, not related to them, are required to be licensed. Care is defined as supervision that is provided to a child through a prescribed program. This includes:

•   Group Child Care (under 36 months)

•   Group Child Care (30 months to school age)

•   Preschool (30 months to school age)

•   Group Child Care (School Age)

•   Family Child Care

•   Multi Age Child Care

•   In Home Multi Age Child Care

•   Occasional Child Care

Licensing Officers inspect, license and monitor over 1,000 licensed child-care facilities in Island Health.

Ministry of Children and Family Development

The Ministry works together with Delegated Aboriginal Agencies, Aboriginal service partners and approximately 5400 contracted community social service agencies and foster homes, cross government and social sector partners to deliver inclusive, culturally respectful, responsive and accessible services that support the well-being of children, youth and families. The primary focus is to support vulnerable children and their families using a client-centred approach to service delivery that builds on the family’s existing resources and capacities. Services are delivered in a respectful, compassionate, strengths-based and culturally appropriate manner to achieve meaningful outcomes.

Ministry services are complementary and families may access a combination of services delivered through: Early Years Services; Services for Children and Youth with Special Needs; Child and Youth Mental Health Services; Child Safety, Family Support and Children in Care Services; Adoption Services and Youth Justice Services.

Ministry of Education

The Ministry provides leadership and funding to the K-12 education system through governance, legislation, policy and standards. The Ministry’s role in helping to meet the purpose of the school system involves co-governing the K-12 education system with boards of education, working closely with a network of partners, including independent school authorities, professional education organizations, public libraries, First Nations representatives, provincial ministries and agencies and the private sector. Specific roles and responsibilities are set out under the School Act, the Independent School Act, the Teachers Act, the Library Act, the First Nations Education Act, the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, the Special Accounts Appropriation and Control Act, and accompanying regulations.

Nanaimo Innovation Academy

Nanaimo Innovation Academy is a licensed non-profit daycare in Nanaimo, BC for children ages 12 months to 3 years old in our Infant/Toddler program or 3-5 years old in our other program.

We utilize the best practices from various educational philosophies-- Waldorf, Montessori, Reggio, Whole Child Education, Play-Based Learning-- without being limited by the rigidity of ascribing to just one philosophy. By being flexible and in constant evaluation of what is best for child development, we can innovate and create a program designed for our students’ current needs, interests, and growth. 

We participate in all Child Care Programs with the BC Government---Affordable Child Care Benefit (ACCB), Child Care Operating Funding (CCOF), Fee Reduction Initiative (FRI), and the Wage Enhancement program (WE).

In addition to providing care for children, we offer workshops throughout the year on Baby Sign Language, Baby Sensory Group, and Parent and Child Mother Goose programing. These workshops are often free or at a minimal cost.

PacificCARE Family Enrichment Society (PacificCARE) is a non-profit organization that sponsors programs to provide support and services to child care providers, parents and families.

Snuneymuxw Day Care

The Daycare Departments objective is to meet the developmental needs of all children for whom care is provided. The goal is to use a holistic approach, which reflects Snuneymuxw culture, to assist them in developing their potential: socially, physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.The Snuneymuxw Daycare is licensed to provide care to infants, toddlers and preschoolers by Community Care Facilities Licensing.

Supported Child Development

The Supported Child Development Program consults to inclusive child care programs for children from birth to twelve years of age who require additional supports.

The objectives of Supported Child Development are to provide:

•   Community-based support to families and childcare settings

•   Equitable access to and participation in childcare

•   Support for families to maintain their integrity

•   Support for communities to respond to the child care needs of all children

Supported Child Development also provides educational opportunities for childcare providers on a regular basis.
