Appetite To Play

Physical activity and healthy eating in Early Childhood (0-5) is important for healthy child development and setting the stage for lifelong healthy behaviours.  Appetite to Play is an initiative designed to support early years providers promote and encourage physical activity and healthy eating.  Appetite to Play provides healthy eating and physical activity recommended practices and practice support resources for early years providers to use in a variety of settings including: daycare centres, family based childcare, preschool and parent participation programs.

The interactive website includes healthy eating and physical activity self-assessment and planning tools, tips and ideas, recipes, games and activities. An online community offers the opportunity for early years providers to connect and share ideas and successes around physical activity and healthy eating in the early years.

Training opportunities including regional training workshops and physical literacy and food literacy e-learning modules present opportunities for early years providers to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence in providing environments that incorporate healthy eating and physical activity.

Good Food Box look up the good food box

The Good Food Box program helps to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the community of Nanaimo.

Currently the program is running weekly during COVID to better help low income families. Families can sign up for a box at $10 and get a minimum of $15 or more value of fruits and vegetables, with a contactless pickup or delivery option.

If the $10 cost is a barrier, there is also a no-cost option on the website for the same box.

You can speak to a health service representative who can connect you with a registered dietitian, who are available 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. You can also leave a message after hours. Ladysmith Community Gardens Society

The Ladysmith Community Garden Society grew out of local residents interest in building community and sharing knowledge related to gardening and local food production.  Members of this garden focus on making inter-generational connections within the community, while increasing awareness of local food security and promoting organic and other environmentally sensitive gardening practices.

Their mission is to co-ordinate, and provide services and information to enhance the quality of life in Ladysmith and surrounding community" Services include:

- Community Food Bank: In August of 1998, the Ladysmith Food Bank opened its doors. We currently provide service to individuals and families in the 245 exchange. To register as a client in the Ladysmith Food Bank, you must live in the 245 telephone exchange area and have at least one proof of your current address such as a current Hydro bill, Telus bill, utilities bill, something that shows where you live now. BC Care Cards for the entire family (we use the numbers from the cards as proof of the size of your family)
- Good Food Box – the mandate of the good food box program is to empower people by giving them access to high quality produce. If you eat, you qualify.
- Born Healthy Prenatal Program - Born Healthy provides education and support for pregnant women and new mothers. Particular emphasis is on developing a healthy lifestyle in order to have the healthiest baby possible. Born Healthy provides nutrition education (including prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding and infant feeding), counseling, mental health education, parenting information and promotes of self-care practices. Born Healthy provides food vouchers, prenatal vitamins and bus tickets for those who need financial assistance. Social support is an important part of Born Healthy. Every Wednesday they have a drop-in time from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The morning includes a discussion topic, guest speaker or activity, we then serve lunch, which is free to all participants, and a Public Health Nurse visits for information sharing, checking baby weights, and is available for questions. These drop-in times help make meeting new people possible and are a chance to share your parenting experiences.

LaFF Ladysmith Family and Friends Food Programs

LaFF is a resource program for families and caregivers from all Ladysmith and surrounding areas with children up to the age of 6 to have a supportive, enriching, safe, and inclusive community environment where they will meet to promote the development of nurturing, healthy, and happy families.

Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank

Meals on Wheels

Whether it’s a”Meals-on-Wheels” program, a senior nutrition program, a public senior meal program or a private meal program, all are important and contribute to senior nutrition and health.  MealCall helps seniors and family members connect with local programs.

MealCall also helps find volunteers for Meals-on-Wheels delivery, meal preparation, fundraising, administrative support, and helps public and private senior meal programs in their community outreach raise awareness of senior meal programs in the community.

Salvation Army Meal Program/Community Services

More children and families than ever before are turning to Salvation Army food programs and centres for assistance. With almost 70 per cent of food banks reporting an increase in the number of families served, it has become a priority for The Salvation Army to offer services to fit the unique needs of families.

As more families and children encounter hardships, The Salvation Army will be there to provide assistance and support in any way that it can. With 86 cents of every dollar going directly to charitable programs, The Salvation Army provides hope and dignity to more than 1.8 million people in more than 400 communities across Canada each year.

Nanaimo 7-10 Club Society

The Nanaimo 7-10 Club Society was started in 1985 by a group of 12 people from differing faith backgrounds who came together to feed hungry children in the city.  Since then, the 7-10 Club has served more than one million meals, not only to children, but also to anyone in need.

The 7-10 Club Meal Program provides a hot nutritious breakfast, homemade soup, plus a brown bag lunch to go that is served by community volunteers to those in need during the  hours of 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.  All meals are offered at no charge.
